SHANNON MICHAEL (MIKE ) LACY

MIKE LACY WAS BORN IN WICHITA FALLS, TEXAS ON NOVEMBER 27, 1940 TO WALTER J. AND MARY LOUISE LACY. HE WENT TO BE WITH THE LORD ON JUNE 4, 2021 AFTER A BRIEF ILLNESS.

HE WAS RAISED IN BURKBURNETT. HE ATTENDED BURKBURNETT SCHOOLS AND GRADUATED HIGHSCHOOL IN 1959. HE WAS THE FOOTBALL QUARTERBACK, PLAYED BASKETBALL, BASEBALL AND RAN TRACK, SETTING A RECORD IN THE 440 THAT STOOD FOR OVER 20 YEARS.

IN JUNE OF 1963 MIKE JOINED THE U.S. ARMY AND VOLUNTEERED TO GO TO VIETNAM. HE WAS TRAINED IN ARTILLARY AND MADE A MEMBER OF THE RIFLE TEAM. THERE HE EARNED AN EXPERT RATING WITH A RIFLE AND RECEIVED A MARKSMAN RATING WITH A PISTOL. THE ORDERS FOR HIS UNIT WERE DELAYED AND MIKE WAS OFFERED A TRANSFER TO GERMANY TO LEARN RADAR REPAIR. TWO WEEKS AFTER HE LEFT FOR GERMANY, HIS UNIT WAS DEPLOYED TO VIETNAM. HE WAS DISCHARGED IN JUNE OF 1966 AND RETURNED HOME.

HE MOVED TO HOUSTON AND WENT TO WORK FOR SPERRY UNIVAC, A NASA CONTRACTOR. HE WORKED THERE FOR 29 YEARS DOING MAINTENANCE AND INSTALLATION ON MAINFRAME COMPUTERS. HE RETIRED AND THEN WENT BACK TO WORK FOR GB TECH AND DID ONE MORE STINT WITH SPERRY UNISYS BEFORE RETIRING AGAIN.

HE MET HIS SWEETHEART, SARA JOHNSON IN 1969, AND MARRIED HER ON MAY 29, 1971 AND MOVED TO LEAGUE CITY WHERE THEY RAISED THEIR THREE SONS, JAMES ROSS, JOE WELDON, AND JEFFREY SCOTT.  MIKE COACHED THEIR LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAMS AND LOVED TO TAKE THEM FISHING. HE HAD BECOME A MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION POST 554 IN LEAGUE CITY. HE MADE SURE HE SIGNED THE BOYS UP AS SONS OF THE AMERICAN LEGION AND NOW THEY HAVE ALL BEEN MEMBERS FOR OVER 40 YEARS. WHILE A LEGION MEMBER, MIKE SERVED 7 TERMS AS COMMANDER ALONG WITH HOLDING OTHER OFFICER POSITIONS. HE ALSO SERVED AS A 9TH DISTRICT HISTORIAN. OVER THE YEARS HE HAS PRESENTED THE AMERICAN LEGION SCHOOL AWARDS TO MANY CCISD STUDENTS, WAS AN ACTIVE PROMOTER OF THE AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL PROGRAM, AND SERVED AS THE BOYS STATE CHAIRMAN SENDING DELEGATES FROM CCISD TO AUSTIN EACH YEAR TO LEARN ABOUT GOVERNMENT.

MIKE WAS PREDECEASED BY HIS PARENTS, WALTER & MARY LOUISE, BROTHER WALTER S. LACY, AND SISTER, MARY LOUISE LACY. HE WILL BE LOVINGLY REMEMBERED BY HIS WIFE OF 50 YEARS SARA, SON JAMES & WIFE ANGELA KIRKINDALL LACY, SON JOE & WIFE FAITH RAE WORD LACY, AND SON JEFFREY. ALSO, THE DELIGHTS OF HIS LIFE, HIS GRANDCHILDREN HANNAH VAUGHN & HUSBAND JOE, JACOB, ASHER, HUDSON, ANNMARIE, BRADEN, JEFFREY, MARY, AND WILLIAM LACY. ALSO BY HIS BROTHER WILLY & WIFE RITA LACY, HIS SISTER PAT & HUSBAND GERALD KLINKERMAN AND HIS MANY NIECES AND NEPHEWS AND MANY GREAT NIECES AND GREAT NEPHEWS.

THE LACY FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO THANK THE DOCTORS AND NURSES IN THE ICU UNIT AT UTMB VICTORY LAKES WHO WORKED SO DILIGENTLY FOR MIKE IN HIS LAST DAYS. SPECIAL THANKS TO THE NURSE WHO USED HER OWN PHONE TO ALLOW SARA TO WISH MIKE A HAPPY 50TH ANNIVERSARY ON MAY 29, 2021. WE WANT TO THANK OUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY WHO HAVE RALLIED AROUND US AND SHOWN SO MUCH LOVE. YOU ARE ALL SPECIAL BLESSINGS.
