Steve Allan Simmons

October 7, 1953 - April 14, 2023

 

Steve Allan Simmons, 69, of Spring, Texas passed away quietly at home after a short difficult battle with cancer on Friday April 14, 2023.He was a very beloved husband, father, “Pops”, and brother.  

 

Steve was born October 7, 1953 in Amarillo, Texas to TB and Maggie Lee Simmons. The family moved to Lubbock where he spent most of his childhood and graduated from Coronado High School, May 1971.He worked in construction for several years during which time he met his future wife Joyce Anne Walters. They were married in January 1976 and later welcomed two children, Megan Leigh and Andrew Peter.  

 

Steve began his Air Force career in April 1977 as a Missile Systems Analyst, earning an Airman of the Year award in 1978.He later earned a Bachelors Degree in Management from Park College, completed Officer Training School, and began his flying career as an F-4E/G Aircraft Commander. After progressing to Flight Lead and Mission instruction, Steve held positions as an F4G Wild Weasel Instructor Pilot, Squadron Bomb Program Manager, and Aerial Combat Instructor. He and his family enjoyed the many experiences of military life both stateside and overseas until June 1989.Steve’s passion for flying led him to settle his family in Spring, Texas where he started his career with American Airlines, flying both the Boeing 727 and 777.Based out of Miami, FL, and Dallas, TX, his flying career at American consisted of both domestic and international routes. Some of his favorite destinations were England, Germany, Japan, Hong Kong, India, Brazil, Ecuador, and Chile. He enjoyed walking the cities and exploring the unique sights of each one. Steve retired from American Airlines in November 2016.

 

His hobbies included golf, carpentry, cycling (MS 150 and Wichita Falls “Hotter than Hell” bike rides), racquetball, reading and long walks.  

 

He is preceded in death by both his parents. He is survived by his wife Joyce Anne Simmons, daughter Megan Leigh Duhon and husband Matt, son Andrew Peter Simmons and wife Lauren and his three amazing, loving, and funny grandchildren, Ella Marie Duhon, Opal Amelia Simmons, and Owen Allan Simmons, to whom he was “Pops”!He is also survived by his siblings Grady Simmons and wife Kim, Tim Simmons and wife Sam, and Barbara Tucker as well as many nieces and nephews.  

 

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church 15415 N. Eldridge Parkway, Cypress Tx 77429.
